The University of California at Irvine (USCI) will include in the curriculum a scholarship course on the Overwatch MMO shooter, whose participants will receive $ 2.5 thousand each.
As part of the course program, students must play Overwatch from 15 to 20 hours a week. Classes include “practice, team meetings, community service, training and competitions.”
USCI will provide teachers with a “professional infrastructure” to improve their work.
The selection of participants starts this summer.
Overwatch was decided to be included in the curriculum due to the popularity of the game among students and the success of the UCI university team, which won the Tespa summer tournament last year.
The Overwatch course appears on the eve of the official launch of the Overwatch League from Activision Blizzard, which promises to turn the game competitions into international events with projected revenues of about $ 100 million per year.
Overwatch is the second game to be added to the USCI program. A year ago, the university launched a course on the popular MOBA League of Legends.
