Japanese Sega has followed the path of Nintendo in terms of transferring popular franchises to the mobile platform. The new game of the Total War: King’s Return series is a familiar product for mobile: a strategy in the spirit of Game of War.

At least three times Sega has been released on iOS and Android with the Total War brand.

Total War Battles: SHOGUN, released in 2012, transferred the gameplay of classic wargames to mobile devices in a simplified way.

The multiplatform Total War Battles: KINGDOM, which appeared in 2016, was a bold experiment in which developers combined the mechanics of desktop turn-based strategies with social solutions.

None of the released projects, even at the peak of the indicators, was included in the American box office Top 100, despite the widespread popularity of the brand.

Now, apparently, Sega has decided to change its approach to the series within the framework of the platform. The new Total War is not an experiment to transfer the original gameplay and not a port. Total War: King’s Return is a clone of the popular mobile strategy Game of War.

Since December 2016, the game has been in a soft launch.

Its development and publication is carried out by the Chinese Elex Technology. The latter is well known as the author of the Clash of Kings strategy. The latter, as of December last year, was among the top ten highest-grossing Android games in the world.

The use of popular mechanics and a well-known brand, as well as work on the project by an experienced developer on the platform, may help the Total War series to become cash on the mobile market as well.

When transferring franchises to a mobile platform, Nintendo acts in a similar way. The company entrusts its brands to third-party developers who have already proven themselves on iOS and Android. Pokémon GO was created and launched by Niantic. Fire Emblem Heroes was created by DeNA.

The first game in the Total War series was released in 2000. Since then, 10 official parts have been released on PC. On Steam, the number of their owners, according to the SteamSpy service, is 17 million.
