The authors of Max Payne and Quantum Break from the Finnish studio Remedy admitted that the creation of high-budget game projects with an eye to a single game has become unaffordable for most developers.

This was told by the head of the communications department of Remedy, Thomas Puha, in an interview with the Game Industry publication.

According to Pooh, over the past decade, the cost of producing an AAA-class game has increased 10 times, and the size of the audience buying titles has remained approximately the same.

The matter is aggravated by the fact that gamers go through most single-player games no more than once, so it is difficult to monetize them repeatedly.

“It’s a bit wild that you spend 4-5 years creating a game, and the player passes it over the weekend. We really want gamers to stay in our projects longer, but this is difficult to achieve in a traditional singleplayer game,” said Thomas Pukha.

Remedy became famous precisely because of its single-player games with a strong plot and cinematic scenarios.

Currently, the studio is working on its first project focused on cooperative passage. Little is known about him yet. The game appears under the working title Project 7. It is reported that it will be a third-person action game.

Despite the position of Finnish developers, successful single-player games with large budgets continue to come out and earn. Only last year there were several similar releases, among which Horizon: Zero Dawn and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice can be distinguished.
