id Software has always been famous for creating games on its own engines, but its new project, Rage 2, is made on Apex. The head of id, Tim Willits, told what dictated such a decision.

For Rage, released in 2010, the first part of the franchise, id Software used its megatexture graphics technology. The idea was as follows: the game level is completely covered by a huge megatexture, which contains additional textures for greater detail, loaded during the game.

However, Willits states, it did not bring benefits to the gameplay, but only brought problems. The players were unhappy with the constant subplots, for a dynamic game it was a very bad decision.

That is why Apex was used in the development of the sequel – Willits promises that the second part of Rage will have an open world without subplots to guarantee a proprietary intense gameplay in the style of id Software. But this does not mean that the studio has abandoned its own technological developments:

“The new technologies that our guys are developing and that have not yet been shown to the public will be very cool. We continue to work closely with our partners who produce hardware. It’s just that it’s important for us to make our games exciting first of all.”
