Last Wednesday, May 27, the second meeting of Unity developers – UUG SPB took place in St. Petersburg. Presentations from the event are in our publication.

В Петербурге прошла вторая в России встреча Unity User Group

The second St. Petersburg Unity User Group was held in the walls of the new office of Playkot, the authors of such social games as “SuperCity” and “Knights: Battle of Heroes”.

This time there were not only more reports – three instead of two – but they also had a more applied nature (the first two, for sure).

The first one is “How to draw 12,000 sprites on mobiles and fast!” – the employees of Zillion Whales (one of the i-Free game studios) read: Unity tech lead Alexander Feer and producer Andrey Korotkov.

In their report, slides to which can be viewed below, Alexander and Andrey talked about how they solved the problem of effectively drawing a large number of sprites in the mobile version of the Mushroom Wars (if you have any questions, you can write to Andrey here).

The second report was read by Valentin Simonov, Field Engineer at Unity Technologies in Russia. He spoke about the most frequent problems and issues of the studios he works with. Among other things, he noted that “every second studio does not know what a cache server is, although now it is free in Pro.”

Valentin also revealed topical issues on WebGL, IL2CPP, UI performance and gave tips on optimizing the latter.

Unity’s Field Engineer also noted that “it is necessary to approach optimization correctly: it is necessary to understand exactly what to optimize, for what and how.” Plus, of course, it is mandatory to test on devices, and not to make do with the player in the editor.

Valentine did not have a separate presentation in slide format (he told using a text editor), but he advised paying attention to the report Mobile Performance Tuning: Poor Man’s Tips And Tricks, slides for which can be found just below.

The third speech was a little out of line on the topic and content. He was told by an employee of the Hermitage about the use of Unity in the creation of training demonstration programs.

In total, there were about 30-40 guests at the event.
