Due to the coronavirus, SuperData has adjusted its forecast for the augmented reality (XR) market. According to new data, the XR industry will earn $6.3 billion this year. This is less than expected.

In the same report, SuperData presented data on sales of VR headsets in the 1st quarter of 2020 (when the coronavirus became widespread). But first, the forecast.

A few common figures

  • In 2020, XR devices and software for them will earn $6.3 billion. The previous forecast was higher and amounted to $6.7 billion.
  • The forecast for 2023 has also decreased. Previously, SuperData promised the XR market a turnover of $14.9 billion for the specified period. Now – $12.2 billion— It should be noted that the company is lowering its expectations for the second time: in a remote report, it predicted $34 billion in turnover of the XR industry by 2022.
  • In the short term, the volume of investments in XR companies will decrease. In 2020, venture funds will invest $923 million in private augmented reality startups — 10% less than last year.
  • However, by 2023, according to a new SuperData estimate, companies’ investments in XR research and development will increase. Due to the growing demand for technologies for remote work and virtual learning, investments in this year may amount to $15.9 billion.

Sales of VR headsets

Sales of top-end virtual reality devices in the 1st quarter decreased compared to the 4th quarter of last year. For example, at the beginning of 2020, 33 thousand Valve Index were sold per quarter. In the last quarter of 2019, Valve sold 103 thousand such devices.

The decline was due to supply problems related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Manufacturers of various helmets, including PlayStation VR and Oculus Quest, have gone into quarantine. Most of the headsets were sold out, and this, according to SuperData, had a bad effect on the sales of Half-Life: Alyx. In March, the game sold 860 thousand copies, but the circulation could be even higher.

Now, according to analysts, the production and supply of helmets are gradually returning to their former course.
