The turnover of the Turkish gaming market for the first time exceeded the billion dollar mark. To be more specific, he earned $1.2 billion last year. And this is against the background of growing investor interest in local companies.

The GAMING IN TURKEY agency told about this in its report. According to him, the revenue of the gaming market for the twelve months of 2021 increased by 26% compared to 2020. The market has not shown such dynamics since at least 2017.

The main driver of growth is the mobile segment, which grew by 27% to $620 million. Also, the PC games market showed good results, whose turnover increased from $230 million to $300 million (by 23.3%).

If we return to the state of affairs on the investment “front”, then, as we have already noted in the title, local gaming teams “attracted” about $266 million during the reporting period.

The figure may not seem very large, considering that from 2015 to 2020, $2.4 billion was invested in Turkish game development. However, it is important to keep in mind that most of the amount — $1.8 billion — falls on the deal between Zynga and Peak Games.

In other words, without taking it into account, only $600 million has been invested in the Turkish gaming industry over five years. Against this figure, the current $266 million looks quite impressive.

By the way, since we are talking about investments, then, according to the same GAMING IN TURKEY, games are now the most attractive investment direction of local IT.

Over the past year, 54 transactions related to the gaming business took place in Turkey. 48 of them were direct investments in gaming companies. In almost half of the cases — in mobile developers engaged in hyper-casual projects.

The report takes 200 pages. Most of them are occupied by various market data and interviews with local experts. We do not see the point of retelling everything. However, let’s run through some basic numbers.

So:

  • 78% of adults in Turkey play mobile games;
  • 52% of mobile gamers in the country are men, 48% are women;
  • 46% of mobile gamers in Turkey spend 10 or more hours a week playing games;
  • 47% of mobile gamers play 2-3 times a day;
  • The most favorite genres of Turkish mobile gamers are puzzles, quizzes and word games;
  • You can find more than 2,600 Turkish publishers on Google Play;
  • Only 21% of the games from Turkish teams are present in both Google Play and the App Store.

By the way, the WN Conference will be held in Istanbul this June. It will be dedicated to the current state of affairs in the Turkish game development. More information about the event can be found here.
