Against the background of the pandemic and mass self-isolation, mobile games were in great demand. How actively they were downloaded and how much they spent on them, — the analytical company App Annie told in the latest report.
Downloads
The first week of 2020 turned out to be significant. Before it, weekly installations of mobile games have never reached 1.2 billion. But this was the peak value. After that, on average, users downloaded 1 billion games a week (this is 20% more than in the same quarter a year earlier).
In total, 14 billion games were downloaded during the quarter. Most of the installations, namely 11 billion, fell on Google Play. This is 25% more than last year. Downloads of games from iOS have also increased, but less significantly — by 20%.
From worth mentioning:
Google Play
- India and Brazil are the leaders in game downloads from Google Play;
- India and Indonesia are the leaders in quarterly growth of game downloads from Google Play;
- casual games, action movies and board games showed the most noticeable increase in downloads on Google Play in the second quarter.
App Store
- The USA and China are the leaders in game downloads from iOS;
- Saudi Arabia and India are the leaders in quarterly growth of game downloads from iOS;
- arcade games, action movies and simulators were the most popular genres by downloads on iOS;
- simulators and adventures showed the biggest increase.
Fees
In the entire history of the mobile games market, there have never been quarters before when $19 billion was spent on games. A record amount. And it is 15% more than a quarter earlier. Moreover, the main growth — 25% — occurred on Google Play.
From worth mentioning:
Google Play
- The USA, Japan and South Korea are the leaders in collecting mobile games on Google Play;
- The USA and Japan are the main drivers of cash register growth with Google Play;
- role-playing games and strategies brought the main cash register to Google Play.
App Store
- The USA is the leader in App Store fees (the country’s revenue jumped by 30% in quarterly terms), followed by China;
- role—playing games, action movies and strategies are the main revenue genres on the platform.
Top Games
App Annie also highlighted projects that distinguished themselves in any way on the global market in April-June.
- Save the Girl by Applovin on iOS was released back in January, but “shot” only after the release on Google Play in March. This is the most downloaded game in the world for the second quarter of this year.
- My Talking Tom Friends was released only in June. This did not prevent the project from entering the top seven most downloaded games of the quarter. The success of the title is due to the super-popular franchise.
- Gardenscapes and Fishdom from Playrix showed significant growth in downloads for the quarter. App Annie calls both games hybrids because of the fusion of the two mechanics.
- Hybrids also include a mix of a social casino and a Coin Master simulator, which in the second quarter turned out to be the fourth mobile fee game in the world. In the first quarter, the game was only in the top 20.
- Ludo King has entered the top 5 most downloaded and top 3 most used games in the world. The main driver of success is the popularity of the game in its native Indian market, where a self—isolation regime also operated all spring. An important feature of the game is multiplayer, invitations to which can be sent via messengers, like WhatsApp.
