How much downloads and revenue of mobile games have grown in the first quarter of this year,” App Annie, an analytical company, said in its latest report.

According to the study:

Downloads

  • weekly downloads of mobile games in March 2020 increased by 30% (compared to similar figures in the fourth quarter of 2019). The main factor is social isolation, which has been switched to in many countries due to the spread of coronavirus;

  • total game downloads from both platforms for the entire first quarter of 2020 (January-March) amounted to 13 billion;
  • iOS gaming downloads totaled 3 billion (an increase of 25% compared to the first quarter of 2019);
  • game downloads from Google Play reached 10 billion (an increase of 25% compared to the first quarter of 2019).

  • most of the downloads on iOS came from China and the USA, they also turned out to be the main drivers of the growth of installations (in China, the number of downloads jumped by 80% compared to the 4th quarter of 2019);
  • Most of the downloads within Google Play came from India and Brazil.

Income

  • users spent $16.7 billion on mobile games in the first quarter of 2020 (this is 5% more than in the fourth quarter of 2019);
  • games accounted for 65% of all App Store revenue and 85% of Google Play revenue;

  • The main driver of revenue growth on iOS in the first quarter was China, revenues from the region increased by 15% compared to Q4 2020;
  • The largest increase in profits on Google Play was shown by the USA and South Korea, they, but together with Japan, were responsible for the largest number of game downloads made on Android at the end of the quarter.

App Annie also shared which games, according to her version, collected the largest number of downloads, revenue, and also achieved the highest MAU.
