The publisher of Zynga was sued. The company is accused, among other things, of hiding the leakage of personal data of millions of users.

What happened

According to Gamesindustry.biz, in September last year, Zynga reported hacking the accounts of Words With Friends and Draw Something players. Logins, addresses, passwords and other user information have floated into the hands of hackers. It is unclear exactly when the cyberattack occurred: the company writes that it “recently” discovered the leak and contacted law enforcement agencies.

Additionally, Zynga “took steps to protect the accounts of users (of these games),” advised them to change their passwords and promised to keep up to date with the investigation.

What is the result

Some players were not satisfied with Zynga’s reaction to the leak. Two of them — Amy Gitre (Amy Gitre) and a minor player, whose interests are represented by his father Nasim Chaudhri (Nasim Chaudhri) — filed a lawsuit in the district court of California. The application was submitted on their behalf and on behalf of all the players involved in this story.

The lawsuit accuses Zynga of 14 counts. Among them are criminal negligence, fraud, unjustified enrichment, violation of information security laws. Besides:

  • the company reported the situation only on the website, but did not send personal notifications to the players by email. Therefore, a number of users may not have found out about the theft of their data;
  • this means that Zynga deliberately misled players by “hiding the fact that it suffered from a data breach.” According to the plaintiffs, this is how the publisher gained time to strengthen his legal defense.

“Only those users who accidentally visited the Zynga (investment) website, read about the leak in the news or subscribed to notifications from independent companies that track data theft were notified of this violation,” the lawsuit says.

It is not known what compensation the plaintiffs demanded from Zynga. The company itself has not yet commented on all these accusations, the media adds.
