Naoki Yoshida told about this in an interview with Weekly Bunshun. He admitted that he was not very interested in the idea of a metaverse. Although some players compare the metaverse with his MMORPG, the developer does not see much in common between them.
Yoshida noted that the metaverse reminds him of “a system that tries to replace reality with a virtual world.” In it, users can also walk around different places and make purchases, as in ordinary life. It may be fun, but it’s not “entertainment,” concluded the producer of Final Fantasy XIV.
Despite Square Enix’s interest in the metaverse, Yoshida himself has no plans to do projects within the concept yet.
