Yesterday, March 5th, another anticipated game debuted—Marathon, an extraction shooter. The project didn't perform as impressively on Steam as Slay the Spire 2, but it still did relatively well.

Marathon

According to SteamDB, the peak number of concurrent players for the Steam version of Marathon in the initial hours post-launch was 88,337. This is less than during the open stress test, where the game's online player count exceeded 143,000, as it was open to all comers. Whether the release version of Marathon will achieve similar results remains to be seen.

For comparison, the peak Steam online count for Destiny 2—another major Bungie game—once reached 316,750 people.

Dynamics of Marathon's online presence on Steam

As for reviews, players are generally satisfied with Marathon so far. Currently, the shooter has an "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating on Steam (89%) based on 4,800 reviews. It is mostly praised for its visual style, atmosphere, and enjoyable shooting mechanics but criticized for the lack of gameplay "features" and an inconvenient interface.

In addition to Steam, Marathon was released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.
