The catalyst for the formation of the union was the deterioration of conditions at Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro.

Magic: The Gathering Arena

In a conversation with the publication Aftermath, activists revealed that recently, relations have soured between the management and regular employees at Wizards of the Coast. Top managers allegedly have been making increasingly controversial decisions, following a "don't like it, there's the door" approach. For instance, they have recently started to phase out remote work and are aggressively promoting the use of generative artificial intelligence.

The developers of Magic: The Gathering Arena added that they had previously tried to form a union several times, but for various reasons, they were unable to complete the process. Now, they are more determined—with over a hundred people supporting the creation of the organization.

Activists hope that the union will enable them to negotiate more effectively with the management.

The developers have already filed a petition with the U.S. National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) requesting permission to hold a vote, and they have also written a letter to the management of Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro. In the letter, they demanded that their union be voluntarily recognized by May 1.
