The CEO of Housemarque, Ilari Kuittinen, shared the first details about the studio's new game, a shooter with roguelike elements called Saros.
In an interview with the Finnish publication Helsingin Sanomat, Kuittinen stated that Saros's budget is comparable to Alan Wake 2.
Remedy has not disclosed the expenses for Alan Wake 2. However, Finnish analysts have estimated the game's total budget at €70 million, with €50 million directly allocated to development. Ultimately, Alan Wake 2 recouped its production and marketing costs after reaching 2 million copies sold.
If we take the €70 million figure as a baseline, the budget for Saros is significantly below most AAA projects from Sony's internal studios. For example, The Last of Us Part II cost $220 million, while Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 reached $315 million. The inflated budgets for these titles are partly due to the studios' locations, as both teams are based in California, one of the most expensive states in the US.
According to Kuittinen, the creation of Saros was made possible thanks to Sony, which acquired Housemarque in 2021 after the release of Returnal. The studio managed to secure additional funding and access to PlayStation's internal resources.
The release of Saros is planned for 2026.
