The Swedish Sports Union has awarded esports the status of an official sport. The Swedish Esports Association has been trying to achieve this since 2017.

108 members of the union voted for the recognition of esports, 71 against.

Note: in 2021, Valve planned to hold The International Dota 2 tournament in Sweden. However, due to the fact that at that time the union refused to recognize esports as an official sport, it was not possible to do this. As Valve explained, the tournament could not claim the benefits that other sporting events received, and it became problematic for its participants to get a visa.
