Last year was marked by mass layoffs for gaming companies worldwide. China was no exception, according to a report from the Chinese platform Gameshark (游鲨游戏圈).

Honor of Kings

Gameshark calculated that the number of employees at Chinese gaming companies decreased from 280,700 at the end of 2022 to 270,000 at the end of 2023. Note: the data only includes people who are part of China’s social security system. Employees of certain outsourcing firms and indie studios were not included in the statistics.

The largest staff reductions were at Tencent (3,768 people), Bilibili (1,133 people), Yonghang Technology (583 people), IGG (501 people), Youzu Interactive (385 people), and NetEase (363 people).

At the same time, some companies experienced significant growth. Among them was miHoYo, whose staff increased by 927 people last year, exceeding 6,000 employees.
