The Sony Corporation has decided not to acquire the entire Japanese media conglomerate Kadokawa. Instead, it has agreed to purchase 12 million of its new shares for 50 billion yen, or approximately $318.5 million, by January 7, 2025.

As a result, Sony will control 10% of Kadokawa—more than any other external shareholder. This figure includes the 2% of shares that Sony purchased in February 2021.
Sony and Kadokawa have also signed a partnership agreement. They plan to cooperate more actively in various areas. For instance, the companies intend to jointly invest in content—from anime to video games—and promote their owned IPs. They will discuss specific initiatives at a later time.
Why Sony decided against purchasing Kadokawa in its entirety remains unknown. News of its plans first emerged at the end of November.
