Sony Corporation has devised a way to make non-player characters (NPCs) more realistic. They have filed a patent application for a system that considers gamers' actions and, based on this, alters NPC reactions.

The technology is expected to potentially impact characters' appearances, dialogues, behavior, and more. For example, in games, enemies could learn to adapt to a specific gamer's fighting style, making battles more challenging.

According to the patent application description, the system will be based on artificial intelligence. Sony anticipates that their development will significantly speed up and reduce the cost of creating realistic NPCs — currently, studios have to manually write complex scripts, whereas AI will eliminate the need to meticulously plan everything out.

It is important to note that even if Sony officially registers the patent, it does not guarantee that the technology will necessarily appear in their games.
