In January-June 2022, China’s gaming market earned ¥147.7 billion ($21.8 billion), declining by 1.8% year-on-year. This was the first drop since 2008, when the Chinese Association of Audio—Video and Digital Publishers began publishing data on the local market.

The drop in revenue is attributed to the increased control of the Chinese authorities over video games.

In the domestic market, the revenue of Chinese gaming companies fell by 4.25% to ¥124.5 billion ($18.4 billion), while in the foreign market it increased by 6.16% to almost $9 billion.

The number of gamers in the country decreased to 665.69 million people. In December 2021, there were 666.57 million of them.
