Spending by Russians on consoles continues to grow, according to the retail network “M.Video-Eldorado.” In the first quarter of 2024, it increased by 104% year-on-year to 12.5 billion rubles.

“M.Video-Eldorado” suggests that in 2024 the Russian console market may set a revenue record. The retailer forecasts that if the trend continues, console sales could reach at least 40 billion rubles by the end of the year. For comparison, the previous record, set in 2023, was 24 billion rubles. In 2022, console sales were much more modest at 10 billion rubles.

The retailer also reported that in the first four months of 2024, Russians bought 580,000 consoles. This is 69% more than in January-April 2023. The most popular item was the PlayStation 5 with a disc drive, with sales exceeding 100,000 units. The Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch also traditionally performed well. Sales of retro consoles also increased, rising 2.5% year-on-year to 200,000 units.

Top-selling games from January-April 2024:

  • PlayStation 5: GTA V, Mortal Kombat 11, Mortal Kombat 1, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Hogwarts Legacy.
  • PlayStation 4: GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, God of War, Mortal Kombat 11, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
  • Xbox Series: Hogwarts Legacy, Forza Horizon 3, Diablo 4, Titanfall, and the Resident Evil 4 remake.
  • Nintendo Switch: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Kirby’s Return to Dream Land, Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and Everybody 1-2 Switch.

According to “M.Video-Eldorado,” half of all games sold from January to April were for the PlayStation 4, and another 27% were for the PlayStation 5. Games for the Nintendo Switch claimed third place in popularity, but their share size was not disclosed. Games for the Xbox accounted for 7.5% of the market.
