Starting January 2027, the so-called "IT Patent Law" will come into effect in Russia, which will expand the possibilities for software patent protection. According to the head of Rospatent, Yuri Zubov, the innovations will also apply to game developers—for instance, they will have the opportunity to patent skins.

Zubov revealed this at the "Era of IP" conference. He did not go into details but pointed out the potential financial benefits of patents.

"[Thanks to patents], it will be easier and more reliable to monetize and profit from them in the future," stated Zubov.

The head of Rospatent also noted that the new regulations will allow the patenting of virtual reality clothing and hyper-graphic user interfaces in general.

How popular these changes in Russian patent law will be among gaming companies remains to be seen.
