China is preparing new restrictions for minors. China’s Central Commission for Cyberspace Affairs (CAC) has published draft rules setting limits on the time that children can spend on mobile applications.

Note: the draft states that the restrictions relate to “Internet applications”. Most likely, they mean applications that require an Internet connection to use.

The younger the child, the stricter the limits:

▪️children under 8 years old — 40 minutes a day;

▪️children from 8 to 16 years old — an hour a day;

▪️children from 16 to 18 years old — two hours a day.

It is assumed that the rest of the time smartphones will work in a special mode. Only emergency services apps, educational apps, apps approved for children, and those apps that parents add to the exclusion list will be available in it.

CAC also proposes to prohibit minors from accessing the Internet from mobile devices in the period from 22:00 to 6:00.

The CAC will accept comments on the draft rules until September 2.
