The revenue of the Chinese video game market as a result of the third quarter of 2022 fell by 19.1% relative to the same period a year earlier. Also, revenue fell by 12.6% relative to the second quarter of this year.
For understanding:
▫️Q3 2021 – ¥73.8 billion;
▫️Q3 2022 – ¥59.7 billion (around $8.2 billion).
The main reason for the drop in indicators is mobile. Sales of games for smartphones and tablets in China for the third quarter fell by 25% relative to the same period last year.
Not only revenue has decreased, but also the number of active players, as well as (especially significantly) the time they spend in video games, – CNG analytical firm reports.
The number of mobile games closed during the period from July to September increased by 89% compared to the period from April to July. One of the 10 closed games was a title created within the walls of Tencent Corporation.
Among the publicly called reasons for the current unfavorable situation: macroeconomic factors, as well as the lack of hits comparable in importance to the games that entered the market earlier.
The journalists of the South China Morning Post believe that the fall is due to completely different moments. First of all — by limiting the amount of time and money that children can spend in games (no more than 3 hours a week), as well as irregularity in issuing licenses for publishing.
