A total of fines were issued to 11 companies, including Valve, Sony, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Riot Games, and Ubisoft.

League of Legends

The fine stemmed from a lawsuit by Brazil's National Association of Centers for the Defense of Children and Adolescents (ANCED). Previously, they filed a complaint in court, claiming that loot boxes in the companies' games resemble gambling mechanics because they contain elements of randomness and incentivize gamers to make repeated purchases. The association would not be as concerned if minors were not playing these titles.

The court agreed with the accusation and ordered the developers to pay a total of 298 million Brazilian reals (57.6 million USD). Each company's fine was based on its size and "degree of involvement in the ecosystem." For instance, the largest fines were imposed on Microsoft, Apple, and Tencent—each at 50 million Brazilian reals (9.66 million USD), Electronic Arts was fined "only" 20 million Brazilian reals (3.87 million USD), and Valve was fined 10 million Brazilian reals (1.93 million USD).

In addition to the fines, the court mandated that companies disclose the probability rates of rewards in loot boxes, warn about the random nature of rewards, enhance age verification mechanisms, and implement refund policies for purchases made by young gamers.

Companies still have the option to appeal the court's decision.
