The Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO) has published a study on the state of the gaming industry in the country.
Sea of Thieves
- There are currently 150 gaming companies across the country, marking a growth of 71.3% over the past six years.
- Last year, they collectively earned €188.7 million.
- Approximately 2,260 specialists are employed in the industry.
- Most of these are young professionals aged 25 to 34, with around 80% holding higher education degrees.
- The country offers 25 educational programs in game development.
- Austrian developers are largely focused on the PC and mobile device segments.
- Additionally, projects incorporating gaming mechanics and technologies are entering the market more broadly. Specifically, AR and VR games constitute about 20% and 35% of the industry, respectively.
- Every third studio has sought government financial support in the last two years.
- The industry's significant players include subsidiaries of the Embracer Group, such as publisher THQ Nordic and Purple Lamp Studios (co-developer of Sea of Thieves).
- Other notable Austrian studios include Mi'Pu'Mi (co-developer of Alan Wake 2), Broken Rules (Old Man’s Journey), ClockStone Studios (LEGO Bridgetales), and Stillalive Studios (Garden Life, Bus Simulator series).
