It's not only Build a Rocket Boy facing problems. The studio Heart Machine has also been forced to undergo major layoffs and is now in a rather precarious situation.

Possessor(s)

The founder of Heart Machine, Alx Preston, shared this news on LinkedIn. In his post, he cited as the reason for the layoffs the collapse of a deal with an unnamed publisher — this publisher was supposed to fund a new, yet unannounced game from the studio, but abruptly changed their mind. The funds allocated from this partnership were a "key source of revenue" for Heart Machine, so the developers essentially lost their livelihood.

According to Preston, there is almost no one left at Heart Machine, and he is uncertain whether the studio will even survive such a blow of fate. Nonetheless, the top manager tries to remain hopeful for the best.

Heart Machine was founded in 2013 and is known for games like Hyper Light Drifter, Hyper Light Breaker, and Solar Ash. Their latest project was the side-scroller Possessor(s), released in November 2025.
