Last week, Nightdive Studios, working on a remake of System Shock, posted art on Twitter with SHODAN, an artificial intelligence from the game. The studio boasted that it created this image with the help of Midjourney. After that, she immediately came under a barrage of criticism.
Many gamers said that using a neural network was a bad idea. They pointed out that Nightdive Studios acted unethically, and advised her to hire real artists. Some people were so disappointed in the studio that they changed their mind about buying a remake.
A few days later, Nightdive Studios commented on these statements. She stated that gamers have not grasped the meaning inherent in the art. “AI, which uses AI to understand how AI can look in a physical embodiment. There’s nothing more meta-ironic than that.” The studio added that it will continue to use neural networks, but will never do it to the detriment of artists.
Recall that the remake of System Shock is due to be released on May 30 on PC. Later, the game will be available on PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
