The number of gamers in China has reached a record level, SCMP reports, citing data from the Association of Audio-Video and Digital Publishers of China. In the first half of 2023, 668 million people in the country played video games. This is almost half of the population of China*.

However, compared to last year, the number of gamers in China increased slightly — by 0.35%.

The revenue of the Chinese gaming industry for the first half of the year amounted to ¥144.3 billion ($20.19 billion). This is 2.4% less than in January-June 2022, but 22.2% more than in July-December 2022. Most of the revenue traditionally came from mobile games — ¥106.7 billion ($14.9 billion).

*According to the National Bureau of Statistics of China, at the end of 2022, the country’s population was 1.411 billion people.
