In February 2020, Counterplay Games closed the Duelyst tactical card game. Three years later, the studio decided to share the source code of the project and publish it on GitHub.

In an interview with the PC Gamer portal, the Duelyst authors admitted that publishing the source code is partly a way to support novice developers. So the studio gives them the opportunity to experiment more and create their own games.

Counterplay Games gives the code under the Creative Commons Zero v1.0 Universal license. As the studio explained, developers can use it without restrictions: not only to develop their own versions of Duelyst, but also to sell them if desired.
