On May 14, 2024, Thekla studio released Braid, Anniversary Edition — a re-release of the cult puzzle-platformer. The title's sales were disastrous.

Braid, Anniversary Edition

Jonathan Blow, the creator of the game, occasionally discussed the sales of the Braid re-release on streams. Recently, the Blow Fan YouTube channel uploaded a compilation of the developer's comments.

Brief Timeline

  • May 20. Blow is somewhat dissatisfied with the sales of the Braid re-release, but thinks it's too early to judge.
  • June 17. Blow stated that the Braid re-release is selling much better than nostalgic games like Atari 50. However, sales still look "like dog shit," and they're far too low for the studio's survival.
  • July 21. At the end of June, the game went on sale with a 75% discount, but it didn't improve the situation. According to Blow, sales are still terrible.
  • July 22. Blow claims that the game shouldn't have been ported to half the platforms (it was released on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, as well as Nintendo Switch). It sells best on Steam.
  • July 27. Blow mentioned that due to the game's failure, the studio can't afford extra expenses. For example, no one is currently working on the Jai programming language — there’s no money for employee salaries. Whether anyone other than Blow is currently working at Thekla is unknown.
