The press service of the Moscow courts of general jurisdiction reported that Take-Two Interactive violated data protection laws. Specifically, part 8 of Article 13.11 of the Administrative Offenses Code of the Russian Federation. This article requires companies to store and process Russian citizens' data within Russia, which Take-Two Interactive apparently does not do.
It is unlikely that Take-Two Interactive will comply with the court's decision. In 2022, it withdrew from the Russian and Belarusian markets, ceasing sales of its games there. The company has not yet announced any plans to return.
Take-Two Interactive is the fourth gaming company fined in Russia this spring. Previously, Electronic Arts and Battlestate Games were fined for similar violations, and Roblox was fined but found guilty of promoting LGBT*. Given all this, it is possible that the court will soon pay attention to other major developers.
*The international LGBT movement is recognized as extremist and banned in Russia.
