In recent years, the share of games on proprietary engines in Steam has significantly decreased, according to data from the analytics service VG Insights. In 2012, they were used in 71% of the new releases on the platform, but by 2024, this figure had dropped to just 13%.

Analysts suggest this shift is partly due to more major gaming companies abandoning their own engines in favor of the Unreal Engine. For example, CD PROJEKT and Respawn Entertainment have made such transitions. Additionally, indie teams find it easier to work with engines already available on the market.
