South Korean developer Pearl Abyss released Black Desert Online back in 2015. But even after five years, the game continues to earn. Moreover, of the $1.7 billion she has earned over the entire time, almost half of the amount came in the last 17 months.
The success of the title is reported by GamesIndustry. According to the portal, for the entire existence of Black Desert Online, 40 million users from 150 countries have installed it. Most of the game’s revenue came from gamers from North America and Europe — 40%. Another 26% was received from South Korea. Black Desert Online collected the remaining 34% in Japan, Taiwan and other Asian countries.
Initially, the game started on PC and only in 2019 received console and mobile versions. Probably, the rapid growth in revenue is associated with the launch of Black Desert Online on new platforms. This is indirectly confirmed by the words of Pearl Abyss CEO Robin Jung.
“We have reached dizzying heights and continue to strive to create the best games in the world,” says Jung. “One of the success factors is the creation of our own game engine. It allowed us to quickly distribute games like Black Desert on several huge platforms and provide players with exciting new content.”
Black Desert Online is an MMORPG, the plot of which is built around events in an open medieval fantasy world that has survived a plague epidemic and a large-scale war.
