The release of the series about the Witcher on the streaming service Netflix seriously affected the December sales of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. In American retail alone, they jumped by 554% compared to the same month in 2018.
This is reported by NPD Group specialists. Analysts also noted that in America, sales of the original book series by Andrzej Sapkowski also increased many times.
The most obvious reason for the rise of the franchise, according to NPD, is the release of The Witcher series on Netflix. Recall that after its premiere in December, the SteamCharts counter recorded a record peak online for all The Witcher games. The impact of the series on the sales growth of Wild Hint itself was first talked about when the game began to rise in the British retail chart.
NPD, however, believes that the growth is due not only to the show. There are other factors as well:
- In December, Steam hosted a traditional winter sale. The discount on the full edition of The Witcher 3 was 70%;
- in the fall, the game was ported to the Nintendo Switch. The growth in the number of platforms could have a good effect on sales at the end of the year.
The NPD Group is confident that the combination of all these factors has led to such a strong increase in the popularity of The Witcher 3. “Physical sales of the game in December in the United States were 554% higher than in December 2018. And even if we exclude the Nintendo Switch, they were still 63 higher,” says analyst Sartori Bernbeck.
Let’s add that back in August, the publisher CD Projekt reported growing sales of The Witcher 3 even four years after its release.
