Publishers can increase the prices of games for the PS5 and Xbox Series X. They will be forced to do this by increased development costs.
This is reported by the research firm IDG Consulting.
Now the standard price tag for basic versions of games is $60. It has not changed since 2005. At the same time, over 15 years, the average cost of developing console titles has increased by 200-300%.
So, according to IDG, publisher 2K is going to set a price tag of $70 for the future NBA 2K21. Other publishers may also follow the path of price increases. At least, they are considering such a possibility, analysts say.
As noted by IDG CEO Yoshio Osaki in a comment for Gamesindustry.biz, prices of $70 will also cover the development costs only partially. The increase from $60 to $70 is only a 17% increase.
Osaka added that “not every next-gen game should cost $69.99.” However, in the case of flagship AAA, such a price tag is justified.
