The video game market in Malaysia earned $673 million in 2019. This makes the country one of the largest gaming markets in Southeast Asia.

Analysts provided brief statistics of the industry in Malaysia, including demographic.

  • There are 20.1 million players in Malaysia. These are mostly residents of cities, since they are the ones who most often have access to the network.
  • Mobile gaming is the most popular. 75% of players play games on a mobile phone; 66% choose PC games; 55% – console games.
  • The interest in these three segments among players of different genders is shown in the diagram below:

  • Over the past six months, 87% of paying gamers in Malaysia have made in-game purchases. Most often they purchased bonuses (power-ups).
  • The most popular game genre is strategy. Such titles are played by 38% of mobile gamers, 38% of PC players and 32% of people who prefer games in the browser. The most successful is Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Over the past six months, 35% of online gamers in Malaysia have played it.
  • The highest-grossing franchise, however, is Candy Crush from King. Candy Crush Saga and Candy Crush Soda Saga were played by half of the paying gamers, and it should be borne in mind that monetization in these games is tied to bonuses.
