While Firefox OS is trying to conquer the world with budget devices, Sailfish OS is receiving support from Chinese manufacturers, and Tizen is hiding behind Samsung – Canonical is raising money for the first smartphone using crowdfunding.

The year of new platforms somehow did not work out. We still haven’t heard about iOS and Android competitors. Well, do not take seriously the somehow working Firefox OS. Actually, Ubuntu is now also ridiculous to perceive as a potential rival to large platforms, since Canonical is raising money for the manufacture of the first smartphone on its own, using the Indiegogo crowdfunding platform.

It looks somehow very frivolous.

On the other hand, pathos, and at the same time with self-confidence, developers do not hold.

Ubuntu Edge is “a smartphone and a PC in one high-tech device,” they say in their Indiegogo profile and ask for $32 million.

The first 50 lucky people who have contributed $10,000 each will receive Ubuntu Edge in April 2014. Only three people have wanted to test the new smartphone with fervor, with heat so far; the $600 participation option is much more popular (delivery in May 2014).

Fundamental for Ubuntu Edge developers was the idea of convergence, i.e. combining several functions in one platform. Therefore, Ubuntu Edge is not just a smartphone, but at the same time a personal computer that will fit in your pocket. To turn into a full-fledged PC, you just need to connect your smartphone to the monitor. Moreover, the user can choose whether his device will run on the Ubuntu or Android mobile operating platform: both are already pre-installed on Ubuntu Edge.

The “advanced technical characteristics” of Ubuntu Edge will ensure its smooth functioning as a personal computer: here is the “fastest multicore processor“, and 128 GB of memory, and 4 GB of RAM. Add to this two cameras and a 4.5-inch display made of mega-strong sapphire glass – to scratch it, you need to “carry diamonds in your pocket“. The dimensions (64 x 9 x 124 mm) and the external design of the smartphone should make Ubuntu Edge as convenient to use as possible. And with the help of two LTE antennas, it will be possible to freely use 4G Internet in Europe and in the USA.

As of today, $3.5 million has already been collected through joint efforts. The company will last until August 21, 2013.

Yes, only those who helped finance it will be able to get smartphones.
