Bad Robot Games, the gaming division of the J. J. Abrams film company, has closed a Series B funding round. The studio received more than $40 million from investors, including Tencent.
The money will go to the development of the studio itself, and to the development of games “that are not only interesting to play, but also interesting to watch,” According to Anna Sweet, CEO of Bad Robot Games, the projects created will be cross-platform and cross-media. They will also be made on the basis of both game and movie IP.
Now Bad Robot Games is working on some kind of original cooperative AAA title for PC and consoles. The studio talked about it last December and has not yet shared new details.
The investment round was led by Galaxy Interactive. Together with her, Horizons Ventures, Iconiq Capital and Tencent invested in Bad Robot Games.
Two veterans of the gaming industry also joined the studio team. The position of technical director was given to Joe Rumsey, who previously worked on World of Warcraft and Starcraft 2. The senior level designer was Oneil Howell, who worked on Just Cause 4 and Tiny Castles.
