Another studio attracted investment from Supercell. The Finnish giant has invested $2.8 million in startup 2UP Games, which is working on a cooperative game for mobile platforms.
Details of the transaction under the NDA. Neither Supercell nor 2UP Games did not disclose the terms of financing. Most likely, the money will go to the development of a cooperative mobile game — this is the first and so far the only project that the studio from New Zealand is working on.
2UP Games opened six months ago. At the moment, it employs only four people, two of whom are not even part of the main staff. The studio was founded by Tim Knauf and Joe Raeburn.
Knauf previously worked at Weta Workshop and Magic Leap, where he participated in the creation of the AR game Dr. Grordbort’s Invaders.
As for Rehburn, he was one of the first employees of the British Space Ape Games, which was noted for the mobile strategies Samurai Siege and Rival Kingdoms. Note that 62% of this studio has also been owned by Supercell since 2017.
Supercell often supports young companies. For example, just two months ago, the Finns invested $17.6 million in the indie studio Metacore (formerly Everywear Games). However, previously the authors of Clash of Clans did not invest in developers from New Zealand.
