The potential tax on online gambling could generate over 13 billion euros for the European Union budget in its initial years, according to preliminary estimates by the European Commission.
This involves a levy of 3% on the gross revenue of operators. The measure is being discussed as part of the budget framework for the 2028-2034 period. According to a report seen by Politico, the introduction of the tax would generate an average of 1.9 billion euros per year, directly feeding into the EU budget.
Previously, supporters of the initiative in the European Parliament estimated potential tax revenues at 28 billion euros over seven years. The new assessment from Brussels is significantly lower than these expectations.
Approving the online gambling tax will require unanimous support from all 27 EU countries. Malta, home to a large number of gambling companies, is considered a likely opponent.
