The Hungarian government has ordered an audit of the Regulatory Activities Oversight Authority (SZTFH). The new government of Péter Magyar and the TISZA party is considering the dissolution of the agency and the transfer of its functions to bodies under direct government control.
SZTFH was established five years ago. In addition to the gambling sector, the agency regulates mining, geology, legal professions, and tobacco sales. The regulator has faced a number of controversies, including the issuance of a 35-year casino license to CAI Hungary Kft without an open tender.
In response to the audit, the regulator issued a statement defending the results of its activities and highlighting its achievements — particularly in combating illegal gambling. The agency asserts that it has made "significant strides in curbing the activities of illegal online gambling organizers" within this sector. Also noted was the work in tackling the sale of tobacco products to minors, including conducting "tens of thousands" of retail inspections and blocking illegal online stores.
Péter Magyar took office on May 9, ending Viktor Orbán's 16-year governance by the Fidesz party. His cabinet is also reviewing other state entities, including Szerencsejáték Zrt, which has already seen a leadership change. Conclusions about the SZTFH situation are expected to be submitted to the country's justice minister by the end of the month.
