The Chinese company Tencent announced the impending closure of its Tower of Saviors project. The game will disappear from stores in October. The reason was the players’ dissatisfaction with the rigid monetization model, according to China’s Mobile Game Market.

The original Tower of Saviors was developed in 2013 by Hong Kong studio Mad Head Limited.

She became one of the first Puzzle & Dragons clones. This, we recall, is a game that enjoys enduring popularity in Japan.

After the success in the Asian market, Tencent bought the rights to publish the project in China.
The corporation released the game under the same name – but in a modified form – in 2014. The changes mainly concerned monetization: it became much more difficult to play without large investments. Since the original version from Mad Head Limited was still in stores, a massive outflow of users from the version from Tencent began.

The corporation tried to promote the title through its messengers. WeChat and Mobile QQ were integrated into the game. However, this, apparently, did not help.

Tower of Savior has become the second game that Tencent closes due to low performance. Earlier, the company announced that it would remove the Chinese version of Monster Strike from stores. The game is one of the most popular mobile projects in Japan, but in China it failed to repeat this success.

Let’s add that both projects – Monster Strike and Puzzle & Dragons, which served as the prototype of Tower of Saviors – share almost all the revenue from mobile games on the Japanese market. Attempts to adapt them for other markets have not had much success so far. For example, Supercell recently announced the closure of the Smash Land project, which repeated the mechanics of Monster Strike.
