Over the past couple of weeks, the attitude of many players to Genshin Impact has changed a lot. Now users are actively criticizing the game. They are dissatisfied with the gacha mechanics, which they initially perceived as optional. One popular YouTuber decided to delete all the videos where he used the local donation system. Why are streamers and players unhappy?

In many reviews of Genshin Impact that have appeared on Metacritic over the past couple of weeks (now the average score of players is 5.4 /10), users somehow complain about gacha, the lack of high-quality high-level content and the inability to play without donating at the later stages of the game.

A similar reaction is observed mainly in the West. Canadian blogger Michael Tash, known for the YouTube channel Mtashed, was upset that his videos could encourage viewers to spend money in Genshin Impact.

As a result, Mtashed deleted videos in which he spent money on “prayers” and buying characters, and stated that for many people gambling can become a serious problem — both from a financial and psychological point of view. A number of other streamers also began to warn viewers against using gachi.

“If you’ve spent more than a thousand dollars in this game and you’re not streaming it, I advise you not to spend any more. You don’t get content, in fact, you’re just being deceived,” Lacari, a Twitch streamer, replied to one of the viewers who was surprised at the amount of money spent on prayers.

Why doesn’t everyone object to gachi? Not all players regard gacha mechanics as gambling.

A Reddit user under the nickname aigorith told how he spent $ 2,400 on a full leveling of the Venti character. Faced with criticism, he tried to explain his position.

“If I want to enjoy the game with limited time, I will have to spend money on it to compensate for the lack of time. Actually, I hate gambling. I knew the price in advance for pumping Venti and just paid for it,” aigorith said.

Attitude to gacha in different countriesAt the same time, the dissatisfaction of Western players is also related to cultural peculiarities.

In countries like South Korea and Japan, gacha mechanics have long become the norm and are found in many projects.

Unlike Asian countries, American users are used to paying either to buy games for fullprice, or to pay for cosmetic improvements.

“Those who are not familiar with the intricacies of this model will treat it with great suspicion — while these same users may not object to similar predatory business models in other areas, notes Florence Chee, professor at the School of Communications at Loyola University.

Developers’ positionStudio miHoYo does not believe that it imposes gacha on players.

“The game gives you a lot of freedom and it absolutely does not force you to pay. Some users prefer to explore the open world of Teiwat, others team up with friends to play in a cooperative. And some players like to constantly collect new characters and pump them up, a company representative said in a conversation with WIRED.

Despite the increased discontent of gamers, Genshin Impact earned $245 million in the starting month only in mobile. At the same time, most of the revenue was generated by Chinese and Japanese users.
