The analytical company DFC Intelligence has calculated how COVID-19 has affected the industry. This time, the focus is on console game publishers. Spoiler: companies have record growth for the fifth year in a row.
The main thing from the report:
- DFC focused on four publishers: Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, Take-Two Interactive and Ubisoft.
- over the past five years, the combined market value of these four companies has grown by 174%, and during the pandemic (from February to August) – by 43%. Today it is $137 billion;
- the total revenue of publishers for the first half of 2020 increased by 15% compared to the same period in 2019;
- Take-Two has the strongest increase in revenue for the first half of 2020 (48% more than in the same period of 2019). DFC explains this with constant revenue from GTA Online and Red Dead Online games services and the expansion of the company towards sports games;
- Activision Blizzard’s revenue growth for the first half of 2020 was 15% (all thanks to a diversified portfolio of projects and a bet on game services), it surpasses other companies in market value.
- Electronic Arts earned 16% more in the first half of this year than a year ago;
- Ubisoft is the only publisher whose revenue has fallen. The company’s earnings decreased by 19% (there is a whole scattering of factors: the lack of new releases since the beginning of the year, and a series of scandals). Nevertheless, DFC believes that the company has great growth potential;
- during the pandemic, the value of Ubisoft shares increased by 10%.
